Purpose:The Legislature found that the number of leaking underground storage tanks throughout the state was increasing and that there existed a serious threat to the health and safety of citizens because substances contained in leaking storage tanks are often potential ground water contaminants and major fire and explosive hazards. The SFM Agency was tasked with developing regulations that would include " Provisions to establish a system for licensing tank installation and removal contractors;"

Issued Certificate Descriptions:Applicants for must pass a test given by the Agency; this testing is offered once a month. An applicant may take up to two tests before having to wait six months to test again. Once an applicant passes the test, the Agency issues a three year license.

Potential HarmWithout the proper training and licensure procedures there could be tanks installed or removed incorrectly resulting in leaks of hazardous materials into the ground water. This is an environmental hazard and a potential for fire/explosions.
