Potential HarmRegistered nurses provide more advanced medical and nursing care than licensed practical nurses, including but not limited to, establishing nursing diagnoses and goals and outcomes for treatment, treatment plan coordination, evaluating responses to interventions, patient and family communication and delegating nursing interventions that may be performed by other health care workers. Grave harm to the public would occur if RNs were not licensed or regulated by the state. The potential harms include incompetent or poor care by licensed and unlicensed individuals due to a lack of standardized training and education, increased risk of errors in care, patient safety issues, an inability to hold individuals accountable for poor care and unprofessional conduct, a decrease in trust in the healthcare system, and an increased risk of the provision of poor services or a lack of access to services that can result in serious injury or death.
