Purpose:The commission shall educate the community at large to the problems encountered by law enforcement authorities, promote respect for law and encourage community involvement in the administration of criminal justice. The commission shall be an agency of the state, and the exercise by the commission of the powers conferred by the provisions of Neb. Rev. Stat. 81-1415 to 81-1426.01 shall be deemed to be an essential governmental function of the state.

Accomplishments

Since July 1, 2020:The Nebraska Crime Commission oversees the administration of all law enforcement training and certification standards for Nebraska. This effort is addressed in concert with the Police Standards Advisory Council and the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center. Revisions to the administrative requirements associated with citizens reporting allegations of misconduct as defined in Nebraska Revised Statute 81-1403(6) are found in Nebraska Administrative Code Title 79, Chapter 9. Significant progress has been made to refine the process to address the investigation of informal complaints which could be grounds for revocation of a law enforcement officers certification. The Nebraska Commission on Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice took steps to modify the agency website to post the statutorily required list of decertified officers and the basis for those revocations. Efforts to implement hiring bonuses for new law enforcement officers was implemented beginning in 2023. In addition, the Law Enforcement Officer Attraction and Retention (LEAR) program began issuing payments in 2023 to 2800 law enforcement officers.
